Admiral Cheng Ho from China
arrived in Semarang by ship for the first time in 1405 on a mission of friendship
and trade. A second visit followed in 1416, during which some of his crew fell
sick and he was forced to anchor at Pantai Simongan. To pay homage to this
master mariner, Semarang’s Chinese community erected a temple in 1724. The
citizens of Kota Lumpia (Semarang’s nickname is “The City of Spring Rolls”)
also commemorate the life of Cheng Ho annually in cultural parades that take
place at several points around the city.
